One place in India that I would visit if I could - Goa

Image
One state in India that I would visit is Goa. From what I have gleaned from on the Internet, I can tell that Goa is a state with many beautiful beaches and mesmerizing sunsets. Goa also boasts its wide variety of water sports, this definitely interests me, as I sail on the weekends and love to spend time out at sea. Goa also has much local Indian cuisine, especially seafood, which I enjoy eating. There are not only flawless beaches but there are also many Portuguese churches and the diverse landscapes in Goa. One of the many pros of Goa is that it is one of the smallest states in India, so it will be easy to fully explore the entire state. Some of the highlights of Goa that are interesting to me include the Bom Jesus Basilica, Arambol beach and Mapusa Market, which can allow me to explore the different aspects of Goa, the religious side, the entertainment side, and the handicrafts side. This is able to show that Goa is indeed a very interesting state and I would definitely like to visi...

A tradition that was lost but revived - the hawker tradition

Nowadays, we have hawker centers in every neighborhood, providing us with delicious and affordable food everyday. The hawkers manning their stalls wake up in the wee hours in the morning to provide food for the early customers and only pack up when the sky is dark. This shows that the life of hawkers is not easy, and the money that they earn from being hawkers is quite little. This generation of hawkers have been working for very long ever since the 20th century. Now, the generation are more educated and they might view being a hawker as menial work, and might not want to continue the practice of being a hawker. This will inevitably lead to the loss of a tradition, especially when the median age of hawkers now is 60 years old, so they will eventually have to retire soon. However, if there isn't a new batch of hawkers to take over, the hawker culture will eventually die out. But the government has indeed taken a lot of steps to help the hawkers out amidst the pandemic. For example, ...

Something that is related to my tradition which is lost due to globalisation - Farming

From the past, a few thousand years ago, in order to obtain food, people will farm for a living. Farmers will have a plot of land and workers will come and work on the land. The farmers will then sell the harvested crops to others and this is how the cycle of farming will continue. Hence, we can tell that farming was a very integral part of every tradition and farming has helped civilization until today. However, farming has been slowly dying off ever since globalization and now farming is deemed as the job of a laborer and an uneducated person.  This reminds me of a time when I used to live in Hong Kong when I was around 4 or 5 years old. We were living there because of my father's work and I can still remember that we used to own a very small area of land in the agriculture area of Hong Kong. The entire farm was run by a couple and we had a small area of land where we could plant whatever we wanted. My family and I planted many seeds and grew many vegetables. We used to visit the...

A poignant memory with my grandparents

Image
This memory - a one which I shared with specifically my grandmother, is very special and I remember it until this day. When I was very young, say 4 or 5, whenever my grandmother would stay with my family, she would cook dinner for us almost everyday. After cooking, she will go and take a shower because she will be very sweaty. Everyday, without fail, when my grandmother is showering, I would help her prepare her makeup bag for her to use when she comes out of the toilet. I still remember her makeup bag is a purple one, with flowery designs on the bag. My grandmother would come out of the shower with her hair wrapped up in a towel and I would always laugh at her as she looked hilarious that way. When she sat down on the bedroom floor to apply the makeup to her face, I would know the exact process in which she used the makeup, and would know to hand over the next bottle of makeup when she finished using the last one. I can still remember clearly that one bottle of makeup was a white Lane...
